- WHY:In a sea of Japanese whiskies that are either unfamiliar, overpriced, or not even Japanese (or not even whisky!!), Iwai stands out as one of the best values in the genre as well as one of the best tasting, showcasing the delicacy and nuance that put Japanese whisky on the map originally.
- HOW:Using a blend of roughly 30% single malt from the Mars Shinshu distillery in Nagano, and 70% grain whisky (previously contracted from elsewhere, but now partially distilled on site), the Iwai brings classic blended whisky suaveness with additional richness and texture.
- WHAT:Iwai is named after Kiichiro Iwai, who originally helped commission Masataka Taketsuru’s travel to Scotland in 1918 in order to learn more about whisky distillation. When Taketsuru returned years later their professional relationship ended, andTaketsuru would go on to build Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery, and eventually found the Nikka company.But Iwai kept Taketsuru’s notes and eventually built the Mars company’s distillery to the original specifications. Iwai 45 is bottled at 45% ABV.
