Reviews:
- Burghound: A deft application of wood surrounds the notably ripe aromas of dark pinot fruit, cassis and cherry liqueur. The sleek, delicious and intense medium-bodied flavors possess very good volume as well as fine depth and persistence on the sneaky long, firm and balanced finish. This youthfully austere effort is also going to need at least a few years of patience first
- Jasper Morris: One third whole bunch, ie one of three tanks was 100%. The Bachelet boys have an additional hectare in Fussière from 2020, exceptionally well placed. Almost black in the centre. Black cherry, very powerful indeed with some firm tannins and still very good acidity. Sterner and weightier, not for the ethereal minded. The wine had not yet been adjusted for sulphur and a second sample was fresher, though along similar lines.
Producer Information
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot was established by Marc and Alexandre Bachelet in 2005 and is situated in Dezize-lès-Maranges, a commune of Maranges at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. The wider estate covers around 20 hectares (50 acres) of estate-owned and contracted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines in climats including grand cru vineyards in Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. Additional holdings include premier cru plots in Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Maranges itself (in particular, 50 percent of the Clos de la Boutière vineyard). The Bachelet brothers are descended from a long-line of Burgundian winemakers, and together they cultivate a combination of family-owned and leased vineyards covering a total of 20 appellations and producing 8300 cases of wine per year. No herbicides are used in the farming of the vineyards and yields are kept purposefully low through debudding. Grapes are harvested by hand and, in general, the wines age in 25 percent new oak barrels for approximately 12 months before racking and aging on their lees for six to eight months in bottle. In addition to its grand and premier cru wines, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot makes a range of white and red village-level wines from vineyard plots in Santenay, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet. These wines sit alongside the domaine’s expressions of Bourgogne Rouge and Blanc.
