Description

Red Wine: 2005 | Chateau Bellefont Belcier

The 2005 presents itself in a deep ruby color. The budding bouquet is still dominated by toasted oak with hints of vanilla and nutmeg, but airing releases aromas of ripe black berries. The frank and fresh attack is followed by a sappy and fleshy body, supported by tasty and elegant tannins.

Reviews:

  • Wine Advocate: Rich and earthy, the 2005 Bellefont-Belcier comes from an estate of 33+ acres and is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A structured, potentially long-lived wine, it has a dense purple color, notes of cassis and black cherry liqueur, a deep minerality, ripe tannin, and a beautiful, full-bodied mouthfeel and finish.
  • James Suckling: Wonderful aromas of blueberries, coffee, and lightly toasted oak follow through to a full body, with medium chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Needs time in the bottle.

Producer Information

Château Bellefont-Belcier is a grand cru classé estate in Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. It makes Merlot-dominant red wine. Since 2017 the property has been owned by the Vignobles K Group. It is located on the Pavie Slopes south of the village of Saint-Émilion. There are 13.5 hectares (33 acres) of vineyards within the 20-ha (50-acre) estate. Production totals around 80,000 bottles per year. These vineyards are planted on clay and limestone soils, although there is some variation of terroir across the estate. Plantings are around 72 percent Merlot with 17 percent Cabernet Franc and 11 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are on average around 35 years old. Grapes are fermented in long cement vats that are arranged in a circular hall. The grand vin is aged for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels with 80 percent new wood. Bellefont-Belcier also makes two second wines, Marquis de Bellefont and Les Tours de Belcier. The vineyard was founded in the mid-18th Century by Count Louis Francois de Belcier. In 1803, he built the château, which he named Bellefont, or “beautiful spring”. The building still stands today. As one of the oldest properties in Saint-Émilion, it is often described as a belle endormie (sleeping beauty), with a very high potential given the quality of its terroir. The property is located between Larcis Ducasse and Tertre Roteboeuf, and also borders with Pavie and Troplong Mondot. Other châteaux in the Vignobles K stable include Tour Saint Christophe in Saint-Émilion, and La Patache in Pomerol.
